Moving from the US to Italy - what to expect
Quote from joe98 on January 16, 2025, 7:00 pmHello All,
I recently received some interest from the company I work for in the United States to possibly transfer to a branch in Genoa, Italy. I have been to Italy, speak a little Italian, and love Italian food, but I know literally nothing about what it’s like to live there for the long term. The offer is for a non-expat position meaning I would be there for a long time and I think the mature thing to do would be to understand the challenges associated to a big move like this. I have posted a couple of general questions below but any advice from anyone who has moved to Italy from another country would be greatly appreciated.
How does the cost of living compare to the United States?
Are semi-permanent visitors of Italy given a hard time with finding places to live, renting cars, etc? If so, how hard? I consider myself pretty resilient to cultural differences but I think it’s important to be ready.
I have a bunch of questions but generally, what should I expect to be the hardest adjustment with a move from the United States to Genoa?
Thanks everyone, I look forward to your responses.
